Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of approach shafts down to the facility... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action underscores British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among thousands of British troops on duty over the festive period. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
