European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States
The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
