The US central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Fed typically studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication when the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
