Our Top Record of 2025: The Artist's Lux Takes the Top Position.

On the surface, this album could seem closer to an arduous academic challenge rather than a new popular music record by a musician who just had a previous single featured a global K-pop icon. Divided into 4 different movements and voiced in 13 languages, we have a dizzying orchestral-influenced work exploring feminine mystery, religious transcendence, and corporal transformation, frequently by way of the prism of different saintly figures. The end of a love affair—a topic treated with grounded openness on another major 2025 album—is launched skyward on this record, buoyed by the constant sound of a full orchestra and contributions from an award-winning songwriter among a vast roll call of collaborators. The pure audacity alone makes the efforts of other artists look quite laughable.

Rising Above Academic Exercise

That Lux manages to escape dry academic posturing feels almost miraculous, and complete credit going to Rosalía. Although this is not her first project to fuse the past and modern styles, the stakes are much greater on Lux, and the balancing act more dramatic. The element that really raises this fourth album, beyond its multilayered tunes, dense arrangements, and inherent theatricality, is a core spirit of playfulness. Similar to the legendary artist during her height, you find a wondrous quality to Rosalía's voice which sweeps you into its tornado. When she's breaking hearts in two, the listener nevertheless want to stay alongside her for the journey.

A Signature Moment of Joy

That playful spirit comes forth clearly on the stirring piano-led ballad inspired by Saint Clare. It bathes in a string-drenched melancholy over several moments. Then, all the music drops silent, to reveal there's a gleeful giggle followed by a comment prior to a comically over-the-top string crescendo thuds in with cartoonish force. The track immediately segues to the frenetic track driven by galloping orchestration, an imposing choir, and a surprise role from the artist herself.

"The charm of this album lies in the listener never exactly know—nor want to know—where it is going next."

Almost each track concludes in a completely distinct place than where it started. A track examines the transient trappings of celebrity with a featherlight orchestration only to disintegrating in electronic chaos. Another, a song echoing her previous rhythmic style starts out dark and sinister, featuring prowling vocals, until fluttering flamenco handclaps and an angelic chorus arrive to smooth its jagged edges.

The Balance Between Experiment and Pop

Another crucial achievement of Lux involves navigating the gap of radical innovation and mainstream accessibility. It is little surprise that it has achieved her first release to break into the Top 5 of key charts: at its core a collection of truly catchy hits. A song performed primarily in English swells on a refrain that feels to collect increasingly infectious hooks while it spirals skyward. That trick gets repeated on a different powerful ballad that grows and contracts, intertwining multiple tunes as a complex weave.

  • A dance-infused song charms with its jaunty, Disney-adjacent flair and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with pop culture impact of other breakup songs, lambasting an ex- partner described as an "psychological terrorist".
  • Throughout these tracks, the vocals carry a sharp edge, akin to a fairy-tale character concealing a blade: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of disappointment."

A Maximalist Feast for the Ears

This album is pop on a maximalist level, a hungry reach for capital-A Art in an era of looming artificial blankness. It eschews solipsism for glorious elevation, crafting a dramatic drama that skillfully manages its inherent excess. This is an abundant well of hidden gems that takes patience to fully explore but doesn't seem like hard work. Where other big releases of the year seemed like a meager meal, this record is a lavish banquet where the characters around it, some intoxicated on sacred drink, flutter from conversations about historical saints, the galvanizing sensation of heartbreaking sadness, and common gossip about hopeless men. It is a modern-day theatrical production from music's most restlessly creative visionary.
