Fresh analysis reveals that patients who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a leading health publication points out that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users using these medications need to be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Experts propose the way of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is greater among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
