In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several major political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
