The Iconic Game Turns 20 – How a Plastic Axe Bridged Generations Among Rock Fans

Marking two decades since Guitar Hero hit the market in North America, providing everyday gamers the means to become rock legends. Not in reality, but try convincing someone who has nailed the epic lengthy instrumental break in front of a packed crowd of friends.

Developed by Harmonix, the game provided users with a guitar-shaped controller to match coloured notes moving along the screen synchronized to a song. Every sequence corresponded to particular chords, creating the sensation of a genuine performance.

The studio previously tried its hand in the music genre before partnering with RedOctane, later purchased by the gaming giant during the mid-2000s. Collaboratively, they laid the groundwork for a surprising massively profitable franchise which made a remarkable impact for many of the artists included, introducing decades-old groups to millions of gaming enthusiasts.

A former executive, ex-chief operating officer of Harmonix, remembers the initial financial challenges in securing the recordings – even though the first two games mostly used rerecorded tracks.

“We reproduced every song since the dollar figure was so high,” he explains. “Despite having the necessary permissions by themselves, it was nearly impossible. We couldn’t get bands like the Who – the publisher had virtually no money, and we were fairly certain the project would flop. But once the game became a hit, album purchases airtime were going up, everyone wanted to participate.”

He continues: “Among the remarkable aspects was the number of mothers and fathers reached out expressing gratitude for exposing their children to the music they adored. It evolved into an intergenerational phenomenon.”

Timeless Music Gains Younger Fans

Irish blues-rock band the Answer had their track on the 2008 game the popular installment. Guitarist the artist recalls how the series brought older hits to the forefront: “The game provided a bigger, younger audience. Generally this had been seen as music that was past it, but then when it was included in the title young people were finding it, abruptly it became trendy. This validated it, and got rid of the outdated tag. It gave our catalog a new life.”

At that time, the band's debut album remained not available in the US, meaning the game served as a primary platform for exposure for the band during their a North American tour supporting AC/DC. “The roadies were playing Never Too Late during travel, and several knew us from Guitar Hero,” he notes.

Major Band Spin-offs Enduring Impact

Rock’s heavyweight names quickly capitalised on the game's success, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and others starring in specialized spin-off titles that focused on their music collections and related lore, visuals and legendary status. In the case of, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, reportedly to have made the group more money than any of their records. It sold well over half a million copies in its first week, and sales of their songs saw an increase of up to 40% during an era as the industry was already collapsing.

The series still motivates nimble-fingered dedication within the community. Earlier this year, a streamer completed a remarkable feat featuring Through the Fire and Flames – an infamously tough power-metal song made popular by Guitar Hero – using a fan-made version, a freeware game with similar mechanics but an array of personalization features. The song is difficult even in expert mode, let alone played at increased tempo and without missing a single one of its near 4,000 notes. They stated it took months of practice to accomplish.

“The game is a fun, fantasy thing. Just as with other games, it doesn't imply you ought to pick up actual weapons and go to war,” notes DragonForce guitarist Herman Li.

DragonForce previously wrapped up a successful tour when their hit appeared in the third game, yet he explains it turned them into widely recognized. “I recall the record label informing us that we were selling albums like crazy,” he shares. “Popularity surged when we next toured, and we performed right ahead of top acts on the Mayhem festival.”

In fact, the band's visibility from Guitar Hero was so immense that it has threatened to eclipsing everything else accomplishments. Last year, the track featured in promotional material for Despicable Me 4. “Previously I felt otherwise, but I’ve made peace with it,” Li says. “If you only hear one DragonForce song, it’s totally cool – everyone’s got their own musical journey and I’m glad we’ve been part of people’s lives”.

Enduring Impact of a Plastic Guitar

Top-tier marketing, be it for cars, apparel or video games, extends beyond than selling something – it evokes a longing. Did Guitar Hero tap into that? “That’s exactly what our team aiming to achieve,” he confirms. “The excitement of being a music icon in the spotlight. From day one, the creators believed there’s an instinctive urge to make music, and they wanted to leverage innovation to allow people to do it”.

The majority installments came out over a mere five-year period between 2005 and 2010, featuring spin-offs such as the DJ version, complete with a spinning deck, and the band-focused game. Subsequently, corporate focus on peripherals died down, aside from a short-lived revival several years later.

Titles like Clone Hero and newer releases have maintained the community active, with expectations of something from the original publisher on the way. Recently formed developers has entered work on their first music game. Original co-founders are participating in advisory roles. Are gamers ready to embrace a new entry in the spirit of the classic?

“Our team believed those games could be like Madden where you can update every year,” he remarks. “There’s so much new music it could remain perennially popular, thus I remain hopeful. There’s no reason why it can’t continue for future fans.”
